One of my children shared last night that they have standardized testing starting today.
We had a brief conversation with my typical, "simply do your best and learn from the rest" pep talk which includes my sharing that "who you are as a person is much more important than a test score. Never let a test score determine your self worth"
I am sure this conversation gets old for them to hear but I want these seeds planted in their hearts so hopefully their self worth never depends on a test score - or any number for that matter.
I was talking with a friend yesterday who shared how her child discovered the scale.
And when I went to bed last night thinking about my child's comment and my friend's child, it made me think of how many numbers are out there that people may be looking at to determine their self worth....
- Test scores
- Weight on a scale
- Number of followers
- 'Likes' on social media
- Class ranking
- Number of books sold😉
And I am sure there are more I missed.
I invite you to join me to...
Pause. Breathe. Pray.
Let's remind ourselves AND our children that who we are on the inside, our character, is what is most important. May our self worth never be determined by something on the outside, especially a number.
