What is prayer?

What is prayer?

Honestly I used to cringe at prayer because I thought it was like God waving his finger at me shaming me for who I was and the mistakes I made.

Thankfully I now see that I was completely wrong about prayer.  It is a conversation with God.  Talking. Listening.  Sharing. Learning.  God is not standing above me looking down at me, but is actually like a friend sitting on a bench inviting me to come beside him to talk about what is on my heart and mind.

I am extremely grateful for prayer, and how transformative my growing relationship with God has been.  Being prayerful doesn't mean the challenges in life disappear.  What prayer does is equip me for life to handle the good, bad and ugly with greater clarity and peace.  Prayer has taught me to see obstacles as a stepping stones to grow deeper in relationship with God (and others) rather than as stumbling blocks.

I invite you today to…

Pause. Breathe. Pray.

Sit beside God on the bench.  Invite him into your heart and into the conversation in your mind.

Talk. Listen. Share. Learn.

Being prayerful is a process but as with anything, the more you practice, the better you get….and no, you don't get "better" at praying, but the conversation will be more intimate and the greater you will grow in understanding, perspective and peace.

Be well,

Shawn
