One of my favorite Thanksgivings was when I was a freshman in high school. We were moving and our home was not done but we still had our Thanksgiving meal in our soon-to-be family room. Our seats were rolls of carpet. Our table was our laps. Our dishes were paper plates. This was one of my favorite memories because it stripped the day down to what it is all about...
It was about who I was with, not where I was or the other stuff. It was about my parents, brother, sisters and me.
I am so grateful for the people in my life.
Sometimes we can get wrapped up in how clean the home is, how much food is enough, which dishes we should use, what we are to wear, who is bringing what, who owes who how much for this or that, etc.
Let's get back to the foundation of this day, it is about people. People graciously inviting others to join them at their table and deepen their relationships around that table.
I invite us all today to take a moment to...
Pause. Breathe. Pray.
May we give thanks to God for the people in our lives; for those who fuel us, for those who stretch us, and for those who challenge us. May we open our eyes and hearts and recognize we can learn from each person around the table. May we embrace this day at its core, and put people before things and grow a heart full of gratitude.
When gratitude is the beat of our hearts, love, peace and joy will spring up within us and all we can do is allow that love, peace and joy to flow onto others around you.
Gratitude is gift that keeps on giving.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
With gratitude and hope,
"Give thanks in all circumstances." - 1 Thessalonians 5:18
