We met twenty years ago. He wasn't my type...so I thought. Turns out he was thoughtful, kind, caring and made me feel loved beyond measure. Who can resist that?
Our love has evolved...
Then we did keg stands. Now we are content on the couch with a cup of tea.
Then we hung out all night. Now we are asleep by ten.
Then he wrote me letters. Now he does the dishes after dinner.
Then he would plan elaborate getaways. Now our occasional date night out is a gift.
Then we spent money like it grew on trees. Now we have a budget.
Then he made me breakfast. Now he makes our kids waffles and pancakes on the weekend.
Then we would eat D.P. Dough calzones a few nights a week. Now we have homemade family meals.
Then he would write me poems. Now leaves the kids notes before he leaves for work.
Then he we would play "we are the champions" when he would win a game of horse. Now...actually, he still does that:-)
Then he made me mixes on cds. Now he downloads me my new favorite songs.
Then we were polite to one another. Now we are real with one another.
Then he loved me unconditionally. Now he loves me unconditionally.
He is my rock covered in laughter.
He is my calm in this storm called life.
He knows me - my struggles, flaws and all - and loves me wholeheartedly anyways. (And I him.)
Loving one another isn't always the easy choice, but by choosing to love each other, through it ALL, we have a life more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.
For those whose love is young, it will get old. I used to think that was a bad thing, but it's not. When love grows old, it isn't something to throw away, but something worth looking at from a new angle. It is just something that needs polishing, a little TLC.
Then I thought love was a feeling. Now I know love is a verb that needs to be lived out towards one another in order to experience those feelings.
Love will always remain when you choose to live out love to one another. You will come to realize that old love is a treasure, rare and of value beyond measure. As Kenny Chesney says, "here's to another crazy trip around the sun" - and there is no one I'd rather take the ride with than him.
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
